Rainer Karlsch,

After 1945, Soviet stock companies (SAG) replaced the earlier « konzerns » in East Germany. The creation of these SAGs, especially in heavy industry, marked the beginning of a transformation of the traditional culture of manufacturing and large businesses. During the 1950s and 1960s, there existed a « plurisectorial » economy in the GDR, in which the nationalised sector began to show signs of concentration early on. The advantages of this « mixed economy » were abandoned with a last wave of nationalisation of 1972 and the eventual formation of « combinats » in all economic sectors, including light industry. The then strictly centralised economy was easier to manage from the top, which limited the short-term impact of crises, but tended to accelerate economic decline over the medium term.
