Genèse des systèmes de recherche industrielle dans l’industrie de l’aluminium américaine et française entre 1888 et les années trente
Dans l’industrie de l’aluminium, une évolution historique complexe a conduit à l’organisation de la recherche, activité essentielle à la compétitivité des entreprises. La comparaison entre l’industrie française et américaine entre 1888 et les années trente montre le rôle de la personnalité des inventeurs-fondateurs, celui de la composition et de la formation des personnels et celui de la structure industrielle nationale pour différencier les trajectoires historiques des services de recherche de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique, tant pour le secteur amont que pour l’aval. Le comparaison souligne l’originalité du modèle de «proto-recherche industrielle» français associant les contrôles quotidiens menés par les laboratoires d’usines aux recherches menées par les ingénieurs de production à l’intérieur des usines. Cette recherche a été efficace. Après la Première Guerre mondiale, la prise de conscience du fait commercial aboutit à la mise sur pied d’une recherche dispersée mais néanmoins efficiente sur les alliages.
In the aluminum industry, an intricate historical process has les to the organization of the research activity, axis of entrepreneurial competitiveness. A comparison between the French and American industries between 1888 and the 1930s shows the part played by the inventors-promoters, the one played by the composition, education, and training of the manpower, and the one played by the national industrial structure in the differentiation of the historical trajectories of the research departments here and there. The paper stresses the originality of the French model of « proto-industrial research, » linking the daily controls of production by the laboratories with the research carried out by graduate engineers inside the plants. This model was as efficient as its counterpart. After World War I, the awareness of commercial constraints led to the organization of an informal but still efficient research on alloys.
