La nature adaptive et transitoire des formes d’organisation des firmes
Selon l’auteur, la question n’est pas savoir quelles sont les formes optimales d’organisation mais comment celles-ci s’adaptent et selon quel processus. Ce changement est un processus d’acquisition d’information qui prend du temps. L’information étant toujours incomplète, la question cruciale est celle de la coordination entre le délai de gestation des investissements et le délai de transmission de l’information. Ce changement dépend de la capacité de décomposabilité des firmes, qui leur permet de s’adapter à un environnement mouvant. En bref, les formes d’organisation des firmes sont transitoires et les conditions du processus de changement nécessairement singulières.
The key question for an economic analysis of organizations is not so much what are the optimal forms of organizations, but rather how organizational forms adapt to changing circumstances. This change is a process of acquisition of information, which consumes time. There is a delay between investment decisions and their effect on the productive capacity of the firm. Information is always incomplete. The conjunction of these two forms of uncertainty gives rise to the dynamic nature of the organization. Optimality therefore depends on a firm’s « decomposability »–that is, its capacity to react to changes in the environment. Organizational forms are transitory and the conditions surrounding the process of change are necessarily unique to each firm.
