La pénurie d’entrepreneurs en Espagne
Le manque d’entrepreneurs dynamiques et audacieux est considéré par les observateurs comme l’un des principaux handicaps de l’industrialisation de l’Espagne au XIXe siècle. Après avoir passé en revue les différents secteurs de cette économie au cours du temps, analysé le rôle des investisseurs et capitaux étrangers, présenté les contraintes naturelles et techniques, l’auteur montre que l’entrepreneur espagnol n’a pas été absent mais insuffisamment nombreux et audacieux. Il pose un certain nombre de problèmes et explore des directions de recherche qui permettront, espère-t-il, de mieux comprendre une croissance qui fut trop lente, mais non un échec.
The lack of daring and dynamic entrepreneurs is viewed by observers as one of the principal shortcomings of the industrialization of Spain in the 19th century. Following a sector-by-sector review of the economy during this period, the article analyzes the role of foreign capital and investors. Given the fundamental and technical constraints of the period, the autor shows that Spanish entrepreneurs were indeed present, but they were few and they lacked daring. A number of historical problems are presented with suggestions for the direction of future research which should lead to a better understanding of an economic growth that, although too slow, was not a failure.
