An econometric approach makes it possible to determine–negatively–a characterisation of self-financing behaviour. In the case of the eleven colliery companies active in the Pas-de-Calais basin, one may pinpoint two distinctive groups of firms. One harks back to the classical, conventional firm model, seeking to maximise profit, control being exercised by the shareholders. The other group fits in with the managerial model, characterised by a separation of ownership from control: the goal now being expansion of turnover, with the constraint of a minimum profit level. Whereas the classical firm is forever maximising profit, the managerial firm adjusts production level to achieve such minimal profit level as is required by shareholders, this in turn being reassessed to allow for turnover growth.
