Inventivité organisationnelle et compétitivité: l’interchangeabilité des pièces face à la crise de la machine-outil en France autour de 1900
L’interchangeabilité des pièces ne trouve son aboutissement qu’avec l’automobile après plus d’un siècle d’efforts. Elle est une technique qui ne dépend pas seulement sur la précision des machines-outils dont l’industrie, en France, entre d’ailleurs dans la crise chronique dès la fin du XIXe siècle. Elle suppose une organisation nouvelle du processus et du gouvernement de la production. Or le discours sur l’interchangeabilité renvoie souvent plus à lui-même et à un effort industriel qu’à une réalité qu’il faudrait étudier cas par cas par des méthodes archéologiques, comme le font les historiens américains. Sa conquête est toujours spécifiée: elle n’est pas de l’ordre du mécanique mais d’une épreuve qu’on pourrait dire tout autant technique que sociale.
The interchangeability of parts reached its achievement only thanks to the automobile industry after a century-long quest. This technology did not only rest on the precision of machine-tools (their whole industry in France entered a chronic crisis at the end of the 19th century). It implied a quite new organization of production processes and management. Also the discourse on interchangeability often referred more to itself and to an industrial endeavor than to an actuality. The latter should be analyzed case by case through archaeological methods as American historians do. The conquest of interchangeability was always specified. It did not emerge from the mechanical but from an ordeal which could be termed either technological or social.
