L’industrie papetière française a été fortement marquée par les dynasties d’entrepreneurs dont les Canson et Montgolfier, installés à Annonay (Ardèche) depuis 1692, constituent les plus caractéristiques. Cette longévité s’appuie sur un grand nombre d’héritiers à chaque génération, la gestion de l’entreprise par des sociétés familiales, des stratégies matrimoniales avec la bourgeoisie locale ou les principaux fabricants de papier de la région. On note aussi l’attention portée à la transmission de l’entreprise comme à l’éducation des héritiers et à l’innovation technique. Dès l’origine l’entreprise est spécialisée dans les produits fins et spéciaux de haute qualité et la notoriété de la famille comme sa longévité à la tête de l’entreprise sont des éléments essentiels d’une politique commerciale fondée sur une marque qui identifie le produit et le patronyme familial.
The French paper industry has been greatly shaped by employers’ dynasties, the more remarkable of them being the Canson and Montgolfier families, trading in Annonay since 1692. This survival is based on the high number of heirs, familial management of the enterprise through familial companies, matrimonial strategies with local middle-class or with the main paper-making families of the district. Special importance is paid to the devolving of the enterprise, the technical education of the heirs, and technological innovations. Since its origins, the enterprise has specialized in fine and high-quality products; the fame of the family and the survival of the dynasty are main elements of the trade policy of the firm, the trademark being the family name.
